Tool Sets

Let’s start by taking a quick look at markups and tool sets. There is a large variety of customizable markup tools in Revu you can use to add comments, measurements and symbols to a PDF. Each markup in Revu has a set of properties controlling the appearance and information saved with it. Revu’s exclusive Tool Chest feature allows you to store these in custom tool sets and then share them with colleagues around the world.

By default, the Tool Chest  is located in the left panel of the Revu interface. If you do not see this panel, go to Window > Panels > Tool Chest  or press Alt+X.

Next, click Tool Chest at the top of the panel, and then Manage Tool Sets at the bottom of the dropdown menu. You will see the list of current tool sets as well as buttons for the Import, Add and Export functions, which we’ll discuss further in the sections below.

Sharing a Tool Set

To share a custom tool set, you’ll need to export it as a .btx file and then either email it or upload it to a shared network drive, or another file-sharing system such as a Studio Project.

Importing or Adding a Shared Tool Set

There are two different ways to load exported tool sets into Revu, both found in the Manage Tool Sets dialog box.  This is where you decide how your tool set will be managed.

  • Add – Use this function if you want to share a tool set on a network drive, so that multiple users can use it at the same time. Tool sets that reside in a centralized network location are cached locally and can be used while offline. However, while you’re offline, these tool sets can’t be updated or checked out for editing.
  • Import – This function copies the .btx file to the default location, which allows individual users to manage the tool set locally on their hard drive.

Export

The first step of sharing a tool set is to export it. To export a tool set:

  1. Click the tool set’s Settings  and click Export.
  2. Select the folder where you want to store the file and click Save.

Import

Importing a tool set copies the tool set (.btx) file to your local Revu environment. Any changes to an imported tool set will not be reflected in another user’s tool set.

To import a tool set:

  1. Click the Tool Chest dropdown at the top of the Tool Chest panel, then click Manage Tool Sets. The Manage Tool Sets dialog box appears.
  2. In the Manage Tool Sets dialog, click Import.
  3. Navigate to the tool set (.btx) file and click OK.

Dragging the tool set files from Windows Explorer to the Revu window will also import them.

Add

Adding a tool set maintains updates between users, meaning any markups added, edited, or removed from a tool set will apply to all users sharing the tool set.

To add a tool set:

  1. Click the Tool Chest dropdown at the top of the Tool Chest panel, then click Manage Tool Sets. The Manage Tool Sets dialog box appears.
  2. In the Manage Tool Sets dialog, click Add.
  3. In the Add Tool Set dialog, click Existing.
  4. Click the Browse  button, navigate to the tool set (.btx) file and click Open.
  5. Check the Display and Show in All Profiles boxes and click OK.

Revu can manage tool sets in order to prevent multiple users from updating the tool set at the same time. A lock  displays above a shared tool set to show that no changes can be made to the tool set. Click the lock to allow changes to a tool set. A check mark  displays above an unlocked tool set to show that you can make changes to the tool set. Any changes to an added tool set will be reflected across all users who share the tool set.

Profiles

Profiles provide an easy way to store your favorite toolbars, menus and other display settings within Revu. Like tool sets, you can export your custom Profiles and then add or import them to another user’s copy of Revu.

To manage your Profiles, go to Revu > Profiles > Manage Profiles , or click Profiles  in the lower right-hand corner of the Navigation Bar.

Exporting a Profile

To export a profile, select the profile that you’d like to share, then click Export.  The profile will be saved as a .bpx file that can be emailed or uploaded to a shared network drive or any other file sharing system. If you check the box marked Include Dependencies before exporting, then Revu will include tool sets, Bookmark Structures (eXtreme only), hatch patterns and line styles in the exported Profile.  Upon importing the Profile back into Revu, these dependencies will be included as well.

Importing a Profile

To import a Profile into Revu, click the Import button to copy the .bpx  file to the file path found in the Location: field. You can go to this designated folder to remove or copy profiles as needed.

Stamps

Stamps are meant to mimic traditional rubber stamps placed on paper documents. They are static after being placed on a PDF, and can’t be edited after they are placed.

Stamps can be emailed, stored on a network, or sent to other users like any other file. While previous versions of Revu supported stamps with either a .pdf or .brx file extension, stamps with the .brx file extension are no longer supported in Revu 2018.

Importing Stamps

To add a Stamp to the local Stamps folder, go to Tools > Stamp   > Import Stamp.

To use a Stamp located on a shared network location, go to Tools > Stamp  > Change Stamp Folder.

Exporting Stamps

To export a stamp, simply go to the Stamps folder (C:\ProgramData\Bluebeam Software\Bluebeam Revu\2018\Stamps) from Windows File Explorer. From there, you can then either email or upload the desired .pdf file to a shared network drive, or another file sharing system.
